Hi Kimberley.

UK allotments are rented plots of land. Usually they are grouped together on a site. There could be 10, 60 or even more.

The land is generally owned by the local authority and then rented to an Allotment Association who manages the area and rents individual plots out to interested gardeners.

The allotment is used to grow mainly vegetables, some flowers. Sometimes the rules allow the keeping of hens, ducks etc.

It's this regulated structure that makes it an allotment rather than a a vegetable garden or vegetable plot.

Could you please tell me what "allotment" means technically? I've seen it around in the gardening sites and I realize it is a small area that is for gardening, but in what sense is it different from a "plot?" What specifically makes it an "allotment?"
I'm also doing a 2008 garden journal of my community plot and this will only be my second season, so I have a lot to learn!
Your help would be most appreciated. Also if you don't mind, I'm going add Greenforks to my site's blog roll.
Thanks in advance!
