Lost to squirrels but winning on seedlings

I’ve given up trying to secure the protective cage over the birds’ ground feeder. Honestly, it was secured with twelve hooked pegs and the squirrels still managed to turn it upside down again and again. Once I started thinking about using chains (seriously) I realised I’d lost it. Somewhere there is a mutant squirrel with huge biceps, what other explanation can there be? Or a well trained gang supervised by a villainous mastermind. I’m only human and I want to stay sane so I’m simply putting the cage back in place during the day - at least it keeps the pigeons off……. I feel calmer already.

My pepper and tomato seedlings are doing very nicely in the conservatory. I’ve got them sitting on a heating pad. I hope we don’t get too many dull days - it can be a problem when they grow taller and strain towards the light. I do take the covers off during the day to let in more daylight. I sometimes wonder if it’s worth investigating a “daylight” growing lamp. It would have to be portable , not take up much space and be easy to remove when I don’t need it.

How I wish I had a second greenhouse but that would mean losing part of the garden and that’s a no no. Mind you I have got a cold frame and that’s very handy for the more hardy seeds. I can’t use the greenhouse at the moment. It’s still lined with bubble wrap and is heated to keep it frost free. It holds my tender plants including my pelargoniums and carnivorous plants. When the tomatoes are big enough I’ll have to be ruthless and empty the greenhouse to make room for them. Fingers crossed for a warm spell when that happens.

My poor Dad has tried just about every device known to gardener and man to fix his squirrel problem, even live traps. He’d take them to a wooded area about 10 miles from home and let them go, but always said for every one he freed, two must crawl into the wheel wells and come back home with him. :) Like you, I think he’s just given up — the birds will have to fight for their territory.

Hi! Those squirrels are so darn smart I’ve decided to admire them instead of fighting with them. My bird feeder has a baffle, which works just fine, and I’ve moved the feeder away from trees and branches so they can’t jump on the feeder. So they wait underneath for the birds to drop seeds down. Great!
