Take that pigeons
As my enthusiasm for feeding birds has grown so have the number of pigeons that visit my garden. I’ve got collared doves, wood pigeons and feral pigeons. Now I don’t mind them but the feral pigeons in particular can clear the bird table in minutes and then move onto the ground feeding area. I hardly get back in the house before I look out of the window and there they are. Now I’m fighting back.
I bought my bird table years ago but didn’t think I’d need the extra protection of a mesh “sanctuary” so I didn’t buy it. Well that was a mistake. I spent ages on the net tracking down the bird table which the RSPB don’t sell any more (I’m sure I got it from them). Finally I tracked down the manufacturer, Meripak, and bought the necessary add on from thebirdtable.co.uk. I also bought something similar to protect my ground feeder but haven’t assembled that yet.

So here are two of the pigeons looking suitably baffled. Mind you they’ve been attempting to get onto the table for the last four hours, off and on. The blue tits are unfazed and hopped straight in. Hopefully other small birds will not be put off. The Jay was unable to take his usual crop full of peanuts and had to make do with feeding on the ground. Just wait till the squirrel gives it a go. I have an awful feeling he’ll gnaw through the roof. Then I’ll have the mesh sanctuary and no bird table!

My suet feeder kept getting attacked by squirrels. One day it was gone! The rest of the bird feeder was still there, just the suet cage was missing. I found it two days later in the woods next to my house, it had been opened and of course the suet was gone. How’s that for cheeky squirrels!
I’ve just bought a new anti squirrel suet cage. The tube is metal sheet with circular holes cut in it. So far so good, not perfect but it stops them demolishing the contents in one go - and it’s wired onto a line to stop removal. Honestly, the things we do
You put me to shame, you do. I felt so mean when I read how you care for your pigeons. Perhaps you have another kind of pigeons in your habitat. My pigeons eat everything and then sit on my laden fruit bush branches until they drop and they can finish off what should be my produce. Mind you, perhaps I should feed them like you do with seeds and such. But I fear they will only multiply as a result. You probably don’t want to read anything from someone so selfish but just in case you here’s my website : http://www. titanarum.co.uk
Titanarum - we have the same greedy pigeons I think. I don’t mind them having some food, just not all of it. That’s why the guard on the bird table works so well - they can’t stuff themselves in minutes!
Thanks for the link, will visit soon.
