The squirrels are back

They came in the dead of night (or more likely early in the morning). How do I know this?

Well, in an earlier post I’d complained about squirrels raiding my bird feeders. I bought perspex domes to protect the hanging feeders and and then found the squirrels had moved on to my bird table. There they were joined by pigeons. Sigh!

I bought some extra protection for my bird table. Flushed with success I then covered my ground feeder with a new mesh cage. Inside I laid out a fat ball, peanuts, raisins and seed. The cage was fixed to the ground with 4 long metal “pegs”. Neat. Two days later I found this.

I’m now off to look for a hammer, some bigger pegs and possibly some chains. Arghhh…I will not be beaten.

You’re so funny. My 86-year-old father hated squirrels for years because they went after his birdseed. He recently gave up and now he’s feeding them.. . I hate to tell you this, but you’ll never win.

Squirrels are amazing creatures for figuring out a way - even though it might seem near impossible - to get to bird food.

Jane Marie - I could give in…but at the moment I’m still on the losing side. I can’t negotiate a truce unless we are at least heading for a draw.

What am I saying. I’d need to learn squirrel to do that!

Perhaps your father had the right idea :-)

Dang garden pests. Those squirrels were always digging up my bulbs in my other garden. Now I get squirrels, deer, and rabbits!

FIL used to take out his gun and shoot any squirrel he saw in his yard. I used to laugh at him for it. I teased him about wanting to make squirrel stew. I didn’t used to do as much gardening.
