Back from the seaside, watch the birdy!
We’ve returned from our trip to St. Ives in Cornwall. I love the sea and don’t get to enjoy it often enough. I’ll post later about a couple of gardens we visited once I’ve sorted out the photographs. Here’s a quick bird themed post in the meantime.
My battles at home with the pigeons paled into insignificance when I saw the Herring gulls and Great Black-Backed gulls in St. Ives. They appear to have colonised the town, nesting on many of the roofs and standing guard on most chimney pots. This one visited our balcony. Definitely a touch of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” about the town. Very appropriate really as Daphne du Maurier wrote the original short story, and she lived and wrote in Cornwall. Gulls have very beady eyes by the way. They have a reputation in the town for stealing food right out of people’s hands. I could well believe it by the way they sized up everyone passing by.
One of the gardens we visited was Trevarno, near Helston. Showing off for at least ten minutes was this beautiful peacock. He was a real show off and could have been a model on a catwalk!
I’ve just had a quick look in the greenhouse and allotment. It’s shocking how much growth every thing has made in the time we’ve been away. So much work to do that I’m feeling a little faint. Perhaps sorting the photographs will have to wait for a while.

Glad you had a good holiday.
Weymouth (near where we live) has a similar problem with gulls.
There have been reports that they co-operate . . . one startles a human into dropping food by flying close – others dive in and grab it.
The council tries to persuade people not to feed them. The more they are given, the bolder they become.
(They’re big when you get close, aren’t they!)
(The gullls.)
(Well . . . some humans . . . . )

St Ives is a really nice place, I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a holiday in England.
