Disaster for the blue tits
I could weep. I looked out of the bedroom window and noticed nesting material hanging out of the front of the blue tit nest box. Something had destroyed the nest and, I think, killed the chicks the parents were both feeding. The parents kept arriving with food, looking distressed and flying away again without entering the box.
I don’t know what had happened. We have squirrels, magpies and woodpeckers visiting the garden. Could it have been one of them? I’ve never seen anything attacking the box. If anyone has ideas let me know.
I feel so down about the whole thing. I was thinking of getting a camera nest box but while it might have shown what occurred I’m not sure I could bear to see it actually happening.

Squirrels or Greater Spotted Woodpeckers would be my guess, you’ll know if it was a woodpecker, they enlarge the hole to get in usually, so you will see evidence of their drilling. Squirrels usually gnaw too, so again, you’ll see teeth marks.
Really sorry that this has happened, but as they say, Nature is ‘red in tooth and claw’

So sad.

I wouldn’t put it past squirrels either, last year it upset me when i saw a squirrel raid a nest in one of the trees at the back of our house. Nature can be cruel.
