Snuffle, panic and drip

I’ve been snuffling and weeping in the kitchen cutting up onions to make Olive Oil Pickle which lilymarlene kindly posted on her blog. Why are my own onions always so tear making compared to bought ones? Anyway, I’ve managed to dispose of quite a few cucumbers which was the main point of the exercise. I’m suffering my annual “I’m going on holiday next week panic” – “got to deal with the cucumbers, beans tomatoes etc”.

Tomatoes on a plate

So I’m making tomato sauce with the ripe tomatoes and stripping the tomato plants that are suffering from blight. The house is full of green tomatoes laid out to ripen. No doubt many will show signs of decay before they turn colour.  The French beans are fading now but the courgettes are still managing to sneak out the occasional courgette or two. The Runner beans are just getting into their stride – damn you beans, slow down! At least they are easy to freeze.

Why am I looking forward to my holiday? Because I want sun and I’m sick of this rain sodden summer. Take a look at yesterday at 5.30pm. Yes I’m outside under an umbrella and it was as dark as it appears. I must be mad. The last day in August – would you believe it!

mmmm – for once it looks like you may of had more rain than us – but actually I don’t know because at around 5.30 I went to bed to read my book because I was so fed up with the grey skies. Your tomatoes look good. The garden looks very pretty in the rain :)

Karen – You country people, having to live your lives by candlelight :-)

City Garden – I would happily ship the rain over to you if I could :-)

Oh… esaygardener that “I’m going on holiday next week panic”!! I can feel your pain – you will need a holiday after your prep for sure. The tomatoes and beans look tasty. As for the rain we’ve had our share too. On the positive side the garden looks lush! Have a great holiday :-D

Your garden looks good and the veggies too. I understand sometimes one has just enough of rainy days ; in my case sometimes in spring of the sun. Because in general spring is very dry here and I have to wait for the monsoon rains to start. Perhaps this year it will be different. It should be possible to make a cyber rain or sun exchange; perhaps it is better how it is because I think it would be pretty much mucked up like a lot of others things. I have copied the cucumber pickle; in case I am getting a glut! Thank you for the website.

Shirl – I expect to slip into my “couldn’t care less ” mood shortly. This usually follows my panic mode and is a great relief when it finally occurs.

Titania – Yes, cyber weather swopping might be a good idea but only between gardening friends then things might not go wrong!

Your tomatoes look lovely. Sorry you’ve got so many still green, though. The rain … well, we’re never happy with what we’ve got are we? It’s either to wet or too dry. I was pleased to have the thunder storm – we needed the water and I love the excitement of it – but I want to go back to sunshine now for the rest of September!

Runner beans make sensational chutney. This recipe has become a great favourite here…..
