Apples and a rather large owl

I visited the RHS garden at Wisley recently and saw this magnificent owl as I entered the garden. It’s made up of apples and was part of the garden’s ‘Taste of Autumn’ event which took place last weekend. I missed the event but I’m glad I saw the owl. I actually went to see the arboretum and I’ll post about that later.

Note the electric fence! I imagine that when the garden closes lots of tiny little feet make a beeline for that fruit. I wonder how many of them manage to get there.

So many apples!

So many apples, such a small fence!

That’s terrific. (Great post title, too.) Is this Britain’s version of zen-like sand drawings, post-modern impermanent art, or what?

Wow! Worth a trip to Wisley just to see that.

Am having a grand time reading posts on your site. Those owls are such a lovely idea. I too have almost given up on Ipomea – three packages of seed planted – total result: one vine, one flower and three promising buds. Alas killer frost and potential for a little snow in next couple of days – ridiculous – the weather really is out of sync.

What a creative way to make a focal point in the garden. I would of never thought to make a mosaic of apples. Thanks for sharing this with us. Can’t wait to see more of the gardens. :)

Have just caught up with your blog. Found the article about the squirrels and pigeons very interesting. I’m planning to put in a bird bath and feeding area soon. We have plenty of very clever squirrels who seem to manage to break into all kinds of bird feeders. It is hilarious to watch, so I don’t really mind.

They are a very rare breed, those apple owls, and they are usually spotted in Autumn only. They nest on the ground and put up electric fences around their nests to protect their young. Honest!

Beautiful! I do love apples though; I’m afraid I’d want to jump on the owl and crunch my way through every color!

Fantastic effort to make this great picture with apples. I think it could give inspiration for a painting or to stich a small carpet or something.

Kate – I like the impermanent art idea. In a gallery it would be allowed to rot!

Victoria, Kanak & Racquel – It was almost the highlight of my trip :-)

Barbarapc – I think Ipomoea are worth the effort but it is disheartening when you don’t get results.

Lottie – I envy your calm approach to squirrels :-)

Yolanda Elizabet – That idea made me laugh out loud!

Dara – That’s what the electric fence might be for :-)

Titania – It was surprising to see so many colours and how effective it was.
