Creeping Blooming Rot leads to golden delight
Every time I go into the garage to get something out of the freezer I glance at my Pumpkins and Squashes and think “I must do something with them”. It’s not as if I’m short of recipes. I’m putting things off because I haven’t got a machete to hack my way through their armoured hides. They know this, and so begins their campaign of Creeping Blooming Rot!
The rot is rather pretty in a disturbingly fluffy sort of way. “Take action now” it is saying “otherwise I will creep down this Squash and right across the table”…Eeek!
I didn’t have a machete but I do have a very large knife. There that’s better, much more appealing.
It takes me half an hour to cut the rhino hide off but eventually it goes into the oven to roast. It proved to have a wonderful taste, very rich and full flavoured. The top tray will make purée – Pumpkin Pie and Spiced Pumpkin Cake are planned for the weekend. Yum.

Roasting with the skin on usually makes them easier to peel I find.
At least yours showed you it was going on the top part – mine have a habit of going on the bottom and I only get to know about it when I pick them up to make soup, only to find they already are :(
At least you were able to get rid of the rotted part & use the rest of it. Looks very tasty roasted like that!
Ewwww! The rot, I mean. The roast bits look delicious.
All that yellow looks absolutely delicious! And the rot does grab your attention –in a creepy other-worldly kind of way.
It all looks so appealing in your photos–even the fluffy rot part!
VP – I remembered about leaving the skin on shortly after I took it out of the oven – Doh!
Racquel – It was very tasty and a lovely colour.
Karen – My sentiments exactly
Kanak – Yes it was very creepy but strangely attractive.
Susan – I think use of the word fluffy makes for a more attractive rot!
Looks very good… the cooked squash… not the bloom on the outside. LOL
I oven roasted some winter squash last week for Thanksgiving — it was really yummy. I also made a soup from butternut squash for the first time and it turned out delish! Very rich.
I think it might be too late for the pumpkins that are still on the front porch from Halloween. No visible rot, but they’re collapsing. LOL.
