Damp and droopy – and I’m watching you
As we move further into November the garden is looking very tired and lacking in colour. Lots of mushy leaves and dead flowers. It’s all very damp and droopy so I thought I’d see if there was anything still worth looking at.
As you can see the bottom of the garden is slumping into a coma. The tree with the white trunk is a Eucalyptus. Note to self: are you going to cover that Agave before winter?
On the other hand there is still some colourful foliage. This Jasmine is showing some bright green leaves. Strangely springlike for this time of the year don’t you think.
And the variegated Holly leaves are looking very polished and shiny. It’s a pity I don’t get berries.
However, I have got berries on my Sarcococca. They start off red and then turn black.
I’ve got very few flowers now so I have to rely on a hanging basket for colour. Who can resist a cheerful Viola?
I do like bamboos. This one has deep golden yellow stems, almost orange. I keep it in a large pot to stop it rampaging through the garden. When I get round to re-potting it will be a nightmare, like wrestling a gorilla.
Finally one of my cats, Georgie, has spotted a squirrel on one of my hanging bird feeders. You will have to look closely. It has managed to circumvent the squirrel dome hanging above the feeder. You may remember this squirrel from the Olympics in Beijing – it won a gold medal for gymnastics. Georgie is giving it a hard stare – cats are so bone idle and useless!

I love the trunks of Eucalyptus trees – they are such a wonderful colour.
It is lovely to see a longer shot of your garden. The Phyllostachys aurea is also such a good colour for this time of year as well.
Mine is in a pot – and should be re-potted next year – not a battle I am looking forward to! :)

There is alot to be said for the November garden. We have to really look hard to appreciate the little bits of color & interest at this time of the year. Your garden is still quite lovely. Poor Georgie, it’s hard to do anything with a window between you & the enemy. ;)
After the lush green and all the other colors in the summer garden, is quite a contrast with its quieter look in the fall. Your November garden is still looking very lovely. The contrasting colors and textures of your garden are very pretty in the waning light of autumn.
Georgie looks completely absorbed with the squirrel’s antics!
It doesn’t look like a garden in a coma to me, everything looks quite pretty. I’m thinking I have that jasmine, too, although I’ve misplaced the tag (temporarily I’m sure), but yes, it is looking surprisingly fresh faced. I’m not sure how it manages to stay so beautiful, but I like it.
Love your garden and don’t think it looks droopy at all. My sarcococca berries are still red, so your winter’s approach must be a little bit ahead of ours. I cracked up at your lazy cat/evil squirrel photo!
Hi again :-)
I agree it is great to see photos of the garden layout. This area looks pretty good to me just now too. I also love the colour of the Eucalyptus trunk and I must say I really admire your Agave!! Have a good week :-D
The variegated holly is so pretty. Love the colour of the bamboo and the overall look of the bottom of the garden. And the colours of the viola would cheer anybody up!
Agave, variegated holly, jasmine, eucalyptus….I’m jealous x 4! Here we must spend about $10.00 for a tiny little bag of it. And about Georgie – be thankful he’s a layabout – we had friends with a Burmese who on his record year caught 18 squirrels. While that wasn’t pleasant, what was worse was the fact his delicate digestive system ran in reverse when they had guests. Really not nice.
HA to Georgie in the olympic gold category, what an athlete! The tree trunk is eye catching and the bamboo is very attractive but too scary for me to contemplate! I don’t think your garden looks comatose either.

You think this looks droopy? It looks pretty good to me! Love your eucalyptus.
The bamboo is fantastic…I assume it is a clumper! While your garden isn’t droopy to my eye, mine looks similarly droopy to me. Ahh cats…they are entertained by the creatures out our windows! A good life.
Wish I had a eucalyptus!

I think you’ve got some fantastic structural elements in your garden that’ll see you well until the spring. Looks pretty good to me!
Well, on the bright side at least the cats give us plenty of fur to clean up. LOL.
Our fall is kind of spring like here too. I’ve got a rose that’s trying to bloom even though temps have been hovering around freezing and below freezing overnight. It’s been a crazy year.
