Go away I’m hibernating

Who would have thought that there would be a downside to being a hibernating gardener?

[ Hibernating gardener - A person who rushes down the garden to feed the birds and water the greenhouse. This individual glances at the garden but always hurries back indoors saying "Way too cold to do anything outside".

The same person often stares blankly out of the window at the garden. At this time there is little brain activity, though occasionally it flickers into life, but only  for the time it takes to make a cup of coffee/hot chocolate/tea ]

Idyllic! – you would think so wouldn’t you, but as always the outside world intrudes.

Apparently now is the time to do decorating. Now that the roof has been re-tiled the old excuse of water leaks is no longer deemed valid. The bedrooms must be given a complete makeover. The Digger and I do not do this very often – preferring to makeover a garden border instead.

We are doing the WebDesigner’s old bedroom. The cupboards and drawers are still full of his things. Apparently the house in which he lives has no spare storage space. He also suggests I do not decorate his old room in a “wacky colour”. Personally I think the purple walls in our downstairs toilet are very attractive.

Why not, he says, turn the bedroom into a games room? There is already a TV, a games console and a GIGANTIC RED BEANBAG. The beanbag is indeed huge (nearly 5  feet tall/150cm) and a very, very bright red.  This monstrosity was sent to him as a freebie to review on his website. Of course there is no room for it in his house.

Red bean bag

Not enough room to swing a red bean bag

I can put it off no longer. The room is emptied as much as possible, the tools are assembled and I am ready to go.

I just need a small paint brush so I pop into the garage. Oh look,  some bulbs I got in a sale and forgot to plant. Mmmmm…well they will have to be dealt with immediately. I’ll have to put them in pots as the ground is frozen. Poor things. I’ll have to put off the  decorating till tomorrow.

P.S. I’m painting the walls red. There will be too much red. The bean bag  will have to go!

lol – too funny, I suspect we will be ready to start decorating about April!
I knew I had forgotten to buy something this Autumn – Gladadiolus Byzantinus – I like them – and every year I forget (sigh).
Are you really painting the bedroom red?

Gravatar 2 easygardener { 01.10.09 at 12:50 pm }

Karen – Yes I am. I’m tired of muted background colours. Besides this is not just red it is a tasteful Farrow and Ball red (lol).

Yes, I laughed too ;-) Although not at the prospect of decorating– it looms here too. I should start soon – I know…

I also have bulbs in my shed that will need to be potted up very soon! Athough… I do plan to put crocus bulbs (already sprouting) into my lawn this weekend. We will see if that is successful this late on :-)

Have fun painting the room red :-D

Yay, I’ve just read your blog and realised I can now open it on my computer at home. I’ll never work out why I couldn’t do this last year. I had to use my computer at work and risk the wrath of those on high. Now, I can read it more often. Keep up the good work.

I don’t think there was one word of that post that I did not relate to. Too cold to garden, yup; kids moving out and leaving their junk at home, mm-hmm; kids moving out, leaving junk, being bossy about what you look after it, yes, yes, yes; giving up on everything and going back in the garden … yes, a 100 per cent score.

…oops, sorry, just saw the Farrow & Ball bit. We went for Paint Library colour, and it was deep yellow.

Renovating is always such a hard thing to do, until one is in the swing of it. ,,,And the bulbs look so enticing, crying out to be planted. The vegetable gardener andI have to do a bit of TLC to our four walls. The house is now 20 years old and needs a change. My daughter has painted her living-room RED it looks marvelous. It has lots of windows and one can see all the greenery mingling with the red. It is also a special red not just RED. Happy decorating, hope we can see the room when it is finished. http://marie-louiseliving.blogspot.com/

Hilarious. I wish we had room for a bean bag that big, my kid loves to crash into stuff and that would be perfect! I’d come take it off your hands but, you know, we live kinda far away… The bulbs! I never did get my last few daylilies into the ground. Oh well. Hope yours come up from pots, especially the snakeshead fritillaries. Those are my favorites!

Bulb planting is infinitely more of an attractive option to decorating even in the depths of this cold winter. Maybe you might find some other perfect excuses lurking in the depths of the garage.

Cute post! Gotta love the ‘hibernating’ gardener, I mean geez, we work so hard during the season can you blame us for averting our eyes:)) Have fun planting those bulbs, I bet they’ll be just fine. Too funny! I always find some later too. urrr!

Hi EG, I loved this post! Way to show the webdesigner who owns the room now! LOL. I have a family full of offspring with no room for their stuff in their own homes too! It will go into their no room house or to Good will, and I mean it! Love the bulb selections you have chosen too, all good ones.

I don’t blame you for hibernating, some days I do the same thing. lol Thanks for the reminder EG, I need to finish painting the trimwork in the living room, a project that got delayed at the start of last garden season. ;)

LOL-you’re funny. I tend to paint in spring or summer–it competes with gardening, but I like to be able to open the windows to air out the place. I’m pretty sure they’re frozen shut now–my car door was this morning!

That’s how all my bulb buying experience has been, finding them in a bag forgotten once it’s possibly too late. I’m just impressed you decided to get to work planting them in a pot.
P.S. I like the choice of paint color, red is great in a room.

hibernating is good :) when I was a kid I used to hate winter s o much that I wanted to sleep over like bears do :) they eat a lot of pine needles and go to bed for 5 months :)

As I read this I am thinking, hey, she’s talking about me! I stare out my window with a cup of coffee in my hand, run outside to put water in the heated birdbath, run back inside, get more coffee, blog the day away, wish for spring, etc…Then, my daughter is home from college WITH ALL HER JUNK (on top of what she leaves here when she’s gone)…whoo, she’s going back to school next week:) Then I can clean out the guest bedroom of what she’s brought home but DOES NOT NEED!!! Well, I guess I could always look through seed catalogs and garden catalogs, and of course, garden blogs, etc….!!!!!

Now .. will I be able to get you over here and help me paint ? .. I love that huge beanbag !! .. you are so full of energy to take that on girl .. I used to do a lot of painting when hubby would be away .. there are a few rooms that need it .. the pick me up type of activity you can’t just start and leave in the middle though .. so that responsibility SCARES me !! haha
Love seeing the forgotten bulbs .. hehehehehe

Shirl – Good luck with your planting.

Victoria – Parents and children…what can I say :-)

Titania – Yes it is getting started that is the problem!

Karen – If I could give you that bean bag I would :-)

Anna – I wish I wasn’t so easily diverted!

Tina – I agree we deserve hibernating time :-)

Frances – Threats just aren’t working at the moment :-(

Racquel – Once the gardening season starts free time disappears!

Monica – I’ve got so much to do I’ll be decorating in the summer too.

Megan – I hope the red works too!

Ewa – Sensible bears (lol)

Jan – Why should we be left with the junk. It’s not fair.

Joy – I like the painting it’s the preparation I hate. You are admiring the bean bag from the safety of Canada I notice!
