Dinner Party Time!
VP at Veg Plotting has asked us to arrange an imaginary dinner party for 3-5 some of our favourite gardening people. Go to her site and see who everyone has chosen.
Now to my choices. I thought of inviting people from the blogging community but that was way too difficult. There were too many people that I couldn’t leave off the list so that idea went out of the window (lol). I had another rethink and came up with the following.
Monty Don – Having stepped down from presenting Gardener’s World on the BBC due to illness he has now become President of the Soil Association which promotes organic gardening. I particularly wanted to hear about those 80 gardens Around the World he visited for BBC Television. I love that bag!
Christopher Lloyd – His love of colour and his planting at Great Dixter was very inspiring. He also sounds an entertaining character so should be the life and soul of the party!
Lawrence D. Hills – He did so much to establish organic gardening in the UK. He founded The Henry Doubleday Research Association in 1954, now renamed Garden Organic. Here he is with the Comfrey plants he loved so much, showing how they could be used to feed both the soil and plants.
Carol Klein – She is bound to keep the conversation rolling as she is so enthusiastic about gardening and has created her own wonderful garden at Glebe Cottage in Devon.
Beth Chatto – I first visited her garden in Essex many years ago and loved it. I also enjoy her books as she writes so well. A wonderful gardener and my final guest.
My virtual caterers will take care of the food. I’ll just sit back and enjoy the experience.

That looks like it would be a fascinating party to attend. Lots and lots of garden discussion. Maybe even some tips to be had from listening in…
Good choices!
Susan: Perhaps I should record the conversation for posterity :-)
EG – well done, you’re first with Lawrence D Hills! Judging by your picture,s Carol Klein’s whipped out her trusty Felcos out too and has bought along plenty of cuttings for everyone ;)
Here’s to a most enetrtaining dinner – cheers!
Thanks for joining in and enjoy the rest of your weekend :)
VP: Thanks for coming up with the idea!
I so agree about not being able to choose only 5 bloggers to invite. I like your choices, they all seem like such interesting people. And yes, Monty does have a great bag.
MMD: Yes it took ages to decide. Only posting stopped me changing my mind again (lol)
Can I come and just listen in? Please? I won’t even eat!
Carol: Please do! I’m sure we can find you a place at the table (lol)
Your dinner party is going to be fun. I do miss Monty and thought that the bag suited him down to the ground. We have both chosen Carol Klein and and Beth Chatto – they will have to get their skates on to make it to both dinner parties :)
Anna: I thought you had chosen Christopher Lloyd as well but I see I made a mistake! Just as well I only have 5 guests to keep track of. Yes I miss Monty too!
Hi there Denise:-)
Excellent choices there! I could listen to chat from them all quite easily. My fav out of your list would be Beth. I visited her garden a number of years ago too and have listened to a video of her garden many, many times. I’ll need to get a DVD now :-D
Lawrence I’ve never heard of so it would be very interesting to hear his chat with the others as I am sure they would all get on famously. Have a great evening :-D
Shirl: Wouldn’t it be lovely if they could all meet for real. It would be a joy to listen to them!
Sounds like your dinner party will be filled with a variety of interesting and educational topics with the guests you invited. :)
Racquel: Yes, it sounds like a gardener’s dream (lol)
Great list easygardner – interesting to find out about Hills, and to remind me about comfrey and how good its leaves are for the soil – we used to have some but it seems to have disappeared from the garden.
IG: Luckily our Comfrey has never disappeared. It reminds me of Hills every time I look at it.
You have chosen an interesting and lively bunch of dinner guests. I wish I could listen in to their discussions.
I would have chosen the late Christopher too, he never minced his words. Bon appetit!
Titania: Yes I can see some sparks will fly!
There will nothing but good-make that great-garden talk going on at your place-no time for eating at all.
