Squirrel weaving
No this post is not about weaving actual squirrels – although when I see five of them hanging from my bird feeders I am sorely tempted.
The squirrels have their own heavy duty, metal feeder. This I fill with peanuts and they are allowed to nibble away. This feeder is unprotected by bars, traps or tethered Rottweillers.
This has worked well for quite a while. A few days ago I filled it with nuts. The next day it was nearly empty. Mmmm…a mystery I had to investigate.
Aargh! They had used their sharp little Titanium Teeth to gnaw a large hole in the wire mesh. Peanuts were being extracted at high speed. Squirrels have very nimble fingers and I suspect they play the piano in their spare time.
This was not the plan. At this rate a sack of peanuts would be gone in two weeks.
Which leads me to the squirrel weaving. I’m sure you arty types could do it much better but this was an emergency (lol).

Hi EG, ohh how funny! We have that exact same feeder and use those little suet nugget things that cost a fortune. The feeder was $5, the bags of nuggers are the same. Last year the squirrels raided it constantly, it was not hung for them! This year we moved it right next to the house under the overhang by the sliding doors so I could see the woodpeckers and wrens better. The squirrels haven’t found it! A bag of nuggets now lasts months instead of a day or two. Your devils are very clever, there must be a McGyver among them!

Oh my, that is a hoot! I’m sorry the squirrels are being so pesky, but I have to admire their resourcefulness and skills.
And your weaving skills are bad, either!
Funny!! love your ‘Squirrel weaving’ / Tyra
That was so funny! The battle rages on…I can understand why it drives you nuts!
they are clever little, you know whats, arn’t they.
Do you really think that’ll stop them, knowing their track record so far? ;)
Your squirrels are very clever at getting what they want! :)
ROFL!
:)
An natty repair job – hope it thwarts them but if they are anything like the creatures in my garden they never give up :)
Desperate times call for desperate measures!! It may need to be re-vised, but you made the necessary adjustments for the moment!
Hi easygardener love the blog, especially this post about pesky squirrels!
I was wondering.. Would you consider some small form of advertising on your site? Im looking to promote Gardening tools and would love to have a featured article, or even a text link on the home page.
Please let me know if you are interested at scottuswood@gmail.com and we can discuss payment etc.
Thanks,
Scott
Thanks for visiting my blog, eg. I love yours but sadly have to say that my attempts at squirrel weaving have been entirely hopeless! They are far too crafty, determined and so damn strong!
Nifty craft project for your spare time. Maybe next you can knit them some handcuffs out of that green wire… I gave up on bird feeders the day I found my supposedly (ha) squirrel-proof feeder gnawed to bits, complete with bloody smears. Ew!
