The Vegetables say they want a look in!
The vegetables claim they are not appearing in my blog because they are not “exotic and flowery” enough so I’m giving them a post to themselves to keep them quiet.
The big allotment is full of Potatoes, Onions, Garlic and Brassicas of various types. This is more the Digger’s domain than mine. There are no June or July pictures as he can never remember to take his camera with him. Yes I know I could take mine there but it is the principle of the thing. If his vegetables are complaining about lack of coverage in this blog I’m too far away to hear them.
Meanwhile on the small allotment at the bottom of the garden everything is growing well. There are French beans, Runner beans and Climbing peas both Mange-tout and ordinary ones.
This particular pea needs podding as oppose to Mange-tout and Snap peas which can be eaten pod and all.
Courgettes, Squash, Salad leaves, Leaf Beet, Perpetual Spinach, Beetroot and Leeks.
Look how pretty this Leaf Beet is. You can eat the leaves and stems. Although related to Beetroot it has no swollen root.
The Lettuce is doing well too. This picture was taken two weeks ago so the ones at the back have grown much bigger.
I picked the last of the Rhubarb which is coming to an end. Oh look….Courgettes….there’s a surprise!
The greenhouse is full of Tomatoes, Chilli peppers and two Cucumber plants. There are also some pots of Basil and a couple of pots containing some tender seedlings. It is getting crowded in there.
Yesterday I picked these – my first tomatoes. They are ‘Sungold F1′, slightly under ripe but I couldn’t resist them. These small tomatoes are superb for flavour and are always the first to ripen. Biting into that first tomato of the season…perfection!
We are keeping on top of the vegetables we are harvesting but only just. Picking the courgettes when they are small helps but a small army of cucumbers are looming over the horizon. I always grow small varieties but there are a lot of cucumbers appearing as I have five plants (3 outdoors). I feel a cucumber recipe search will be required soon. Sigh…..we haven’t finished the pickles and chutneys I made last year.
It has gone quiet. The vegetables have stopped grumbling. They must be reading this on their iPods. Thank heavens for technology!

Hurrah for the veg ! They are really coming into their own now. I am sure that they will be delighted by your post and will repay you with a bountiful harvest !
I enjoyed your veggie garden. Not only are you producing some wonderful things, it’s pretty too. I’m growing the Bright Lights, too, and we call it chard. While we eat it steamed, I like it best raw in salads.
Love the image of the vegetables reading your post on there ipods!
It all looks very lush and productive down your way, wonderful.
Thanks for the offer of the cat,
I am sure it would love to have a holiday by the sea – and it could bring cucumbers with it as I don’t grow those.
Have a great weekend.

Yum, yum – I wish I had my own garden – I will one day – I love fresh veg – you are one lucky dude!
Veggies with iPods, how deliciously exciting! Sounds like you need to start gifting friends, family and total strangers with last years pickles. I love the look of beans and peas on tripods, a visual feast. We pick the tomatoes here, grown out of doors, as soon as they color up to prevent bird and other critter damage. They finish ripening on the sunny kitchen windowsill and are just as tasty as those allowed to stay on the vine. I like to keep an eye on them.

Waht a lovely post. Pity I have run out of favs for now.
Vegetables can be so much fun at least when they have nothing to complain about. Seriously they look so healthy, yummy, so many varieties a credit to the digger! I must show them to the vegetable gardener. I see and hear so many similarities. He has grown the tall peas, but they were a bit a disaster, lots of leaves and not many pods! When he sees yours…have you posted the carrots they were not bad! The vegetable gardener grows butter crunch lettuce and to his credit there is always so much of it, the chooks have a feast.
Your vegetables look great and well deserve their place in your blog.
So your peas have (i)Pods, amazing!
That’s quite a lot of produce you’ve got from just the small allotment. I wonder how much you get from the big one. Enough to feed an army?
Thanks for the info on Sungold F1, must try that one next year.
Wow, that’s a whole lot of hi-tech veggies! Enjoy the delicious fruit (s) of your labour!
