Vegetables – some surprises and some satisfaction
I have spent this year ( and previous years) whining about our inability to grow carrots. This weekend The Digger appeared with these which he had grown on the big allotment. What cheek. Now I’m the only one who can’t grow carrots!
Look at this beetroot.’ Long, dark red cylindrical roots’ was the description. Obviously this one found a stone in the soil and took a left turn. Any longer and it would have been boomerang shaped.
The Digger also takes the credit for these potatoes. He likes to try unusual varieties. Now I need to find recipes that will do justice to their colour. Will their lovely red tint survive cooking I wonder?
It is just as well that most of my recipes begin with ….’Take a chopped onion and add to….’
Stringing up onions is surprisingly satisfying.

No you aren’t the only one who can’t grow carrots, I am not having much luck either. Sighhh! But the tomatoes are good *grin*
Nope I can’t grow carrots in my native soil. Our heavy clay is just too much for them. Those onions look good… :)
Wow your onions look good and plenty of them. Not tried carrots here but will give them a go, don’t think they will do well as the soil is quite stoney and that causes forked roots. Wonder if they will suffer from carrot root fly?
With home gardening, we are bound to come up with one or two odd ones… The carrot which branch out into two at the tip is quite funny, but the taste will remain the same, I think… Nice looking produce. Cheers, ~bangchik
Lovely produce (even if credit goes to the Digger). Those potatoes are new to me but the onions…! Wow!!
Those potatoes are really unique. I’ll also be interested to see if their appearance changes after cooking. Happy blogging!
The onions look fantastic and how neatly they are bundled and hung to dry and keep. I use lots of onions…shall I say they are so good for you… and tasty. The red potatoes look interesting. I am a bit funny in that respect because I like them best cream or white. Tomatoes red not yellow etc. I had once planted the blue Kongo Potatoes but was not keen on the blue colour. It is probably just to getting used to it. We, or better the Veg. Gardener grows carrots and round beetroots. We use them when they are smallish because in this hot climate they get quickly bitter.
Those veggies look so good. You must beseech the digger to tell you the secret to growing carrots and share it. I’ve never successfully grown carrots either but maybe one day..
Some years carrots grow well for me, other years, they don’t. I had some do pretty well this year, and I was proud of myself for cutting the ends off and washing them right away so they would get eaten.
That beet looks good, though. Did the potatoes change color when you cooked them? They sure were pretty in your photo.
Wow, look at all those onions and pots behind them! Cool!
