Blooming Friday: October, week 3 – Pretty bird seed

Welcome to Blooming Friday.

Birds are messy eaters and all kinds of weeds pop up under my array of bird feeders. This plant is one of them and worth keeping because of the sky blue flowers. They are very welcome at this time of year.

Linum usitatissimum

Linum usitatissimum

It is an annual. The seeds are edible (I buy them to put in bread) and are the source of lindseed oil. The plant also provides the fibres used to make linen.

Hello!

I have a bag full of seeds for next spring. Couldn´t find any place for them this year!
Look forward to se a blue “sheet” in the sunshine then…they´re so beautiful each of them, too.
Have a nice weekend.

How lovely to see these annual linum that bloom in the fall. The linum I grow here is Linum perenne (a perennial), and it blooms in the early summer — although it can keep going for quite a long time if the weather is cool. Recently, I noticed that these plants were putting up new growth; maybe if the frost had held off longer, I would have gotten fall flowers, too.

What a blessing! A very pretty flower indeed. I usually feed the birds with sunflower seeds, but during one period last winter I bought a bag of mixed seeds. Which i regret. The amount of weed I got… I managed to remove them all – didn’t know such blue beauties could be hiding among them!
Enjoy your weekend!

If my bird seed left behind “weeds” like that I’d be thrilled. All I ever get are sunflowers.

I love the way things pop up unplanned and unexpected and you have to decide whether you want it or not. I have never seen or heard of this annual. I will give the birds in my garden a talking-to – I want them to leave me more variety weeds too!

A delicate shade of blue on a lovely little bloom. Mother Nature has the best surprises for us in the garden. :)

I love the blue color of your bloom!

I read your comment on someone’s post where you said you put the leaves you pick up during your fall clean up and put them in corners to provide shelter for the wildlife. I do some of that, too, as well as putting some on my compost pile. There was not a link to your blog, so I Googled it. I’m a Blooming Friday participant, too.
