Blooming Friday: March, week 1 – sun glorious sun

Welcome to Blooming Friday. We have had four days of sun and what a difference it has made.

The Crocuses have stayed open for whole days.

Crocus sieberi ssp sublimis 'Tricolor'

The Snowdrops have finally opened to show a number of variations on a colour scheme of green and white.

Galanthus nivalis

Galanthus 'Sam Arnott'

Galanthus nivalis pleniflorus 'Flore Pleno'

How could we stay away from a post with such a title? No way, freenay, as my kids used to say. Your crocus are as glorious as the light, and the snowdrops are so sweet. They look like petticoats edged in green, what an enchanting flower. :-)

Lovely spring shots – I love the dubble snowdrops!
Mine are hidden in half a meter deep snow….

We’ve got as far as micro-croci round here.

I’ve wandered up and down the three photos and I can’t bring myself to like the one at the bottom. It’s the same with hollyhocks – a summer isn’t the same without the single ones but I really don’t like doubles. And, very often with roses, the less there is to a bloom, the more lovely it is. It’s as if that loveliness has been concentrated. And with snowdrops – it’s the simplicity which gets me . . . I’ve never remembered the names but I think the ones with just little green dots are ones I like best – but isn’t it clever, too, the way the green lines are all there on the insides but not on the outside? . . . and that when you see a field of snowdrops, it’s all very impressive . . . but they come into their own when seen one by one, as individuals.

Your ‘Flore Pleno’ Snowdrop is simply lovely! I don’t think I’ve seen a double form before. I would love to grow them here, I’m just not sure how easy there are to find here.

Here I long for snowdrops but they are covered with lots of snow.

some lovely snowdrops you have. I have never seen the last, doubel, one. A beauty for sure. It will still take a while before the snow gives way for them. :(
