Gardening time seems to lurch forward rather than flow
It seems only last week that I was jumping for joy at the fist snowdrops. Now I have blinked a couple of times and the garden has suddenly moved forward a couple of months. How does this happen? Am I not being observant in-between times? It is a very odd feeling. Considering it happens every year I should be used to it by now.
I am thinking about thisĀ while I weeded the garden borders. The mind has to do something while the hands are busy. I took advantage of the sun and managed to tidy up a couple of areas. The blackĀ pots in front of this one contain Alliums which need planting out once I find some space for them. I had better hurry up as they are growing very fast.
The large green shrub by the garage is a Grevillia ‘ Canberra Gem’ which will soon be covered with small red flowers that the bees adore.
More and more Spring flowers are appearing, including one of my favourite blue ones.
As well as the ever reliable Ipheions which come in white, pink or a very pale blue.
There are the flowers I almost miss unless I look closely. One of the advantages of hand weeding.
And one wild flower I always look forward too as it seeds itself all over the borders.
Now I am wondering….if I breathe in deeply….it will be summer by the time I have breathed out?

I love those scillias. I have not seen them before!
I know what you mean, I feel that Iam doing speed gardening at the moment just to kid myself that I am still in control – which I’m not!
And at this end of the world, one hand is clearing I’m not resting, I’m dead – and the other is pulling out miles of GREEN winter grass!
It’s funny how spring lurches. I was sure I had time catch up on some weeding…and now my weeds are over a foot tall! I must say, your garden is lurching with more style than mine at the moment!
I feel the same – always impatient for spring to arrive, and then I want to beg it to slow the @)#($* down so I can catch up with garden chores!! I guess it will ever be so. Love your grevillia, that one keeps coming up and I think I might need to get one…
Yes EG it all seems to have taken off in the last week or so. I have made a note to get some ipheions this year, persuaded by your description of them being ‘ever reliable’ – that appeals. Hope that you did not breath in too deeply – you must not miss out on April and May :)
It must be good to be back at serious gardening. It will flow and blend well with Summer. ~bangchik
Wow, things are moving on a pace. You patientley wait for this to spout then all of a sudden they are there. funny how that happens. I am waiting for my beans to come through here. Got my potatoes and onions in and today we are clearing the small garden at the top of the house for salad veg. If it’s still sunny go and sit outside and have a cuppa and enjoy your efforts.
Our scillas should be in blossom in a couple of weeks – on some of the older properties the lawns turn blue with their blossoms. It is amazing every year how there appears to be nothing – and not much to do, and then it all explodes. It looks as if our spring this year will be a short one again – from the blast of winter to the heat of summer.
That is just so true, EG – well put. I love the Hacquetia – I came across it for the first time last year and fell in love.
Thanks for your suggestions for a plant for my bare bit – I really like the Libertia – I don’t think it will grow in my heavy shade, but I’ll remember it for future reference!
I think spring has zipped forward much more quickly than usual this year, because the early spring flowers were so late arriving and the late ones so early. I have January daffodils and May daffodils out at the same time – it’s most peculiar!
The scilla is really beautiful. Such delicate detail on the petals and a wonderful colour. It’s amazing how fast things grow once spring gets going, isn’t it?
