About
I live in the South East of England and I’m very keen on gardening. I enjoy looking after both a flower garden and also an allotment where my husband and I grow mostly vegetables.
Those of you outside the UK may not be familiar with the concept of allotments. Allotments are rented plots of land which are grouped together on a site. The site can contain just a few allotments or a considerable number. The land is generally owned by the local authority (local government) and then rented to an Allotment Association who manages the area and rents individual plots out to interested gardeners.
The allotment is used to grow mainly vegetables, possibly some flowers. The produce has to be for personal use (not a commercial business). Sometimes the rules also allow the keeping of hens, ducks etc.
It’s this regulated structure that makes it an allotment rather than a vegetable garden or vegetable plot.
