Welcome to Blooming Friday where we are looking at centrepieces.

Here is a metal sculpture which stands in the centre of a grass lawn. It is in the garden of a manor house which I visited last year.

Sculpture at Chenies Manor

Every year the glass house at Wisley garden has a Butterfly event where butterflies are allowed to fly amongst the Tropical plants growing there. It is an amazing sight and a chance to see these beautiful butterflies up close. I took a picture of this one as it rested in the centre of a plate of fruit.

Owl Butterfly

The wildlife in my garden is less exotic. At present he centre of my bird table is always occupied by Pigeons….Pigeons….Pigeons. All the food disappears in an instant.

Pigeons on the bird table

Most of August has been quite depressing weather wise. Cool temperatures a lot of the time and a fair amount of rain. This has helped the garden plants who are looking fresh and chipper with non of the wilting associated with a dry, sunny summer. It is me that is drooping from lack of sunshine.

Top of the garden

A few hardy Geraniums are still flowering, including this one which tends to sprawl across other plants so is good amongst my Hellebores which are looking very boring at the moment.

Geranium 'Sandrine'

While this Abutilon is flowering its socks off. I have taken cuttings because it will not survive the winter.

Abutilon pictum

My small pond is still looking very lush. Some might say overgrown.

Pond

This plant has crept out of the border and into the water. Its buttercup yellow flowers and light green foliage are very pretty but it can be a bit of a thug given half a chance.

Lysimachia mummularia 'Aurea'

The Rose at the bottom of the garden has few flowers at the moment. The wooden seat is nearly swamped by the surrounding greenery.

Wooden seat

Talking of greenery – some of my Nasturtiums are growing monstrous and my soil is not particularly rich. I have to lift the leaves to see the flowers. This one is starting to creep up the side of the house. Even though I am adding the leaves to salads I am making little impression.

Nasturtium

Now I must finish this post – the cat insists it is time for tea and is making it very difficult to see the computer screen.

Halki takes a stand

While visiting the Chelsea flower show this year we made a point of visiting the Straysparks stand. They produce creative metal work for the garden, all hand made. Most are based on organic shapes. Quite honestly I could bought everything they had but I managed to restrained myself. We contented ourself with two pieces which we then ordered. They were delivered a few weeks later. They function as plant supports but to me they are also metal sculptures, works of art.

The first one is providing support for my perennial Sweet Pea, Lathyrus latifolius ‘White Pearl’. I think they work very well together. The sculpture is composed of a number of twisted and curled plant supports joined together at the base.

Iron sculpture

Twists and turns

White on brown

Lathyrus latifolius 'White Pearl'

The other metal sculpture is based on Poppies.

Everlasting Poppies

The seed heads are actually hollow and open at the top. You could fill them with bird seed or peanuts if you wished as there are small drainage holes in the bottom.

Golden seed heads

Golden seed head

During the winter, when the plants die back both sculptures will provide some structure in the garden. I love them.

Welcome to Blooming Friday. I had a walk around the garden to see what I could discover for this theme.

On the ground uderneath the Eucalyptus tree I found some rolled up bark and a dead branch with three seed pods.

Eucalyptus parviflolia

Nearby were the fallen flowers from a red Camellia.

Camellia japonica 'Kimberley'

It was windy today so my little metal hen had fallen over onto the gravel.

Green hen

Suddenly I heard a scrabbling noise and soil flew up into the air. I turned around to see this….a flattened Daffodil.

Narcissus 'Ice Follies'

Who or what was to blame? The culprit was nearby. It was Georgie my 13 year old cat, having a crazy run through the flower border. Cat owners are familiar with these sudden bursts of energy when a cat jumps at anything that moves. My flowers swaying in the breeze proved irresistable to her.

Georgie

A minute later she looks the picture of innocence. “It is nothing to do with me” she seems to be saying.
